The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry published an article on helping children cope after a move (October 2015). It clearly focuses on the interruption of friendships, the possibility of depression, and the benefits of referral to a child and adolescent psychiatrist to help with emotional problems. It also provides 7 steps to make the move easier.
“In general, the older the child, the more difficulty he or she will have with the move because of the increasing importance of the peer group. Pre-teens and teens may repeatedly protest the move, or ask to stay in their hometown with a friend’s family.”
